Two distinctive phases in the development of colors can be seen since the very beginning of painting until today: historical and modern colors. The development of chemistry has become more and more successful since the Renaissance. In 1704 a new pigment was found by Diesbach's invention of the Berlinerblau (Berlin-Blue). From then on all pigments known before 1704 are called historical or ancient and the ones developed afterwards are called modern pigments.
