Welcome!

Here at Kremer Pigments we field all sorts of questions everyday. Because our product offerings are so diverse, we can assist a young painter preparing traditional gesso, a museum conservator matching a 17th century yellow pigment, and a violin maker looking for raw materials to make the perfect varnish – all within the same hour!

Many inquiries are made repeatedly, but there are always new problems to solve which cause us to peruse some ancient tome or think about a material in a way we hadn’t before.

We would like to share with you some of the queries and answers. Some might seem elementary, but as any teacher can tell you, students can make you look at something you thought you knew, well, anew.

If there is a question you would like answered, do not hesitate to contact us here or by calling our New York store at (212) 219-2394

Please also look through the FAQ and Information and Recipes sections of our website.

    Hello
I’m based in Paris and have been buying your products from Germany for several years. However I don’t speak German.

It was when I was looking up your website for a friend living in NY that I remembered you were based here too.

It’s great to find your site available in English and with a forum for further learning. I will be a frequent visitor.

    Best regards
    Tom J. Byrne

    Hello,
I really enjoy using your pigments, pastes and color concentrates with egg tempera.
I have been using your titanium white color concentrate with my egg tempera medium and it has been working great.
I ordered 1 KG of titanium white powder pigment from you as well as the Polyglycol 400 (along with other pigments, pastes, color concentrates, muller, etc.). I have mulled up the titanium white with distilled water into a creamy buttery paste. When I mixed with the egg tempera medium and painted with it, this white paint crackled pretty badly. I spoke with Kremer in NY and they suggested I add some of the Polyglycol 400 so I added small quantities up to 4% by weight (weight of the pigment plus water in a paste). I still got crackles in the paint. I compared it to the titanium white color concentrate you make and there was no cracking or ‘crackeling’ of the paint.
What am I doing wrong? I must have mulled these pigments for over 45 minutes but it didn’t seem to make a difference.
    Thanks,
    Nathan

My issue is dust collecting on my oil paintings when I brush damar varnish on them. Can I ‘spray’ damar on them with an HVLP gun in an improvised spray booth? I assume this will also guarantee me a smooth varnish finish. What is the ABSOLUTE best way to avoid dust settling on the wet varnish? Thanks
